The Grey School of Wizardry
By Oberon Zell-Ravenheart & The Grey Council |
|
"And so, on August 1, 2004, the Grey School of Wizardry opened its virtual doors." [1]
About the School [2]
The Grey School of Wizardry is an outgrowth of the Grey Council, a team of two dozen
mages and sages. Members of the Grey Council follow many different paths, and may have orientations and perspectives that differ from each other, but they all hope to spark the
imagination, beauty, and power of the minds of seekers everywhere. They worked together
over the year 2003 to weave the best lessons from many of the magickal community’s most respected elders and teachers into the Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, compiled by
Oberon Zell-Ravenheart (New Page Books, 2004).
The Grimoire, however, is only the first phase of a long-range Vision to make available
the Wisdom of the Ages for a new generation and a new Millennium. It is both an essential
handbook of Apprentice-level Wizardry (like the Boy Scout Handbook) and a basic textbook
for a full seven-year academic curriculum of Wizardly studies. Thus, its Lessons begin very
simply and grow more complex as students advance.
The second phase of this Vision is the creation of this on-line School of Wizardry that will
serve as a larger context for the Grimoire and magickal teachings. Designed for students of
ages approx. 11-18 (middle through high school), the Grey School of Wizardry provides an extensive program of studies in all areas of Wizardry and Magick, at an Apprenticeship level. Graduates will be qualified and licensed as “Journeyman Wizards.”
The Departments of Study [3]
1. Department of Wizardry (Indigo)
This department provides a basic introduction to Wizardry and Magick. In particular, the
Class on Ethics will be a pre-requisite to most other Classes in this School.
2. Department of Nature Studies (Silver)
Nature Studies includes all aspects of metaphysics and mysticism that relate to Nature
and Her Mysteries. This Department also covers practical works and adventures in
Nature—such as camping and woodcraft.
3. Department of Magickal Practice (Gold)
Magical Practice includes the practical foundational basics and magickal hardware:
theory, tools, regalia, your sanctum sanctorum, principles of correspondences, signs,
symbols, spells and charms.
4. Department of Mind Magicks (Aqua)
This Dept. includes all forms of “mind magicks,” such as psychic development, meditation,
trance, dreamwork, and “pathworking.” Meditation in particular is the basis of most of
the Eastern disciplines of magick and Wizardry. Properly used, meditation opens the
door to individual growth and personal advancement.
5. Department of Healing (Blue)
Healing refers to all forms of magickal arts and practices devoted to curing diseases,
relieving aches and pains, promoting tissue regeneration, restoring vitality and fertility,
etc. Throughout history, healers have been the folk doctors, nurses and midwives.
6. Department of Wortcunning (Green)
Wortcunning (“herbal wisdom”) is the old word used for the knowledge of the secret
properties of herbs, and this has always been a particular study of the Wise. Wortcunning
includes all aspects of herbal lore and plant magicks. This Department also covers practical work—such as Gardening and Kitchen Witchery. This Department is color-coded “green.”
7. Department of Divination (Yellow)
Divination is the art of foretelling or predicting the future; or discovering things that are
lost, hidden or secret. Although not all seers were Wizards, all Wizards are expected to be
seers. Over the ages, seers have devised many techniques of divination—called the Mantic
Arts (from mantis, meaning “diviner”).
8. Department of Performance Magicks (Orange)
Performance Magick divides into two main branches, each with its own techniques for
opening the mind through entertainment. Conjury or Stage Magic deals with “miraculous”
illusions and special effects, which are used in enhancing the theater of ritual. Magic acts, acrobatics, juggling, puppetry, and fire-eating all came from such rituals. The Bardic Arts
deal with music and language as a way of raising consciousness, evoking emotions, and
transmitting ideas. These include musical instruments, chants, poetry, singing, and
storytelling. In contemporary magickal rituals, the two branches of Performance Magick
often work hand-in-hand.
9. Department of Alchemy And Magickal Sciences (Red)
This Department concerns the science of magic and the magic of science, especially
transmutation and transformation. The forerunner of modern chemistry, Alchemy sought
to turn base metals into gold and formulate an Elixer of Life which would grant immortality.
The inner Mysteries of Alchemy concern the transformation and perfection of the soul. Contemporary aspects include metallurgy, life extension, robotics and artificial intelligence.
Other topics include soapmaking, home brewing, technomagicks, nonmedicinal aspects of aromatherapy, chemistry, and additional areas where magic and science overlap through the manipulation of substances or objects.
10. Department of Lifeways (Pink)
This Department addresses aspects of personal life and relationships, as well as interactions outside of school, including parents and external communities. Studies here will be graduated
for students at different ages.
11. Department of Beast Mastery (Brown)
Beast Mastery concerns everything to do with animals of all kinds—especially animal
communication. Beast Masters include “horse whisperers,” animal trainers, pet psychics,
and all people who seem to have an uncanny ability to communicate and work with animals.
Beast Mastery includes knowledge of zoology and the lore of Totems. Beast Masters seek to
know the names of all animals, as well as how they evolved, what they eat, their behaviors, lifestyles, mating rituals, and languages. The Lore of fabled animals is also included in this Department.
12. Department of Cosmology (Violet)
Welcome to the World of Cosmology! In this Department we will explore no less than the
wonders of the Universe.
The great bowl of the night sky—the celestial sphere—that surrounds our tiny globe has
always been a subject of magickal and Wizardly studies. The movements of the Sun, Moon
and planets through the signs of the Zodiac gave us our calendar, our first way of keeping
time, and our earliest form of effective divination. Cosmology is also concerned with the
larger questions: How did everything begin? Where are we going? Is there anyone else out
there?
13. Department of Mathemagicks (Clear)
The Pythagorean Mysteries laid the foundation for all mathematics; particularly arithmetic,
geometry and music. According to Pythagoras, everything in the universe is based upon fundamental “blueprints” of geometric patterns that repeat over and over in an endless
dance of sound, light and color. They create the entire natural world, and allow us to
experience all the reality we know.
14. Department of Ceremonial Magick (White)
Ceremonial Magic is based upon both the Qabalah and the Hermetica. Ceremonial Magick can
be a transcendental experience that takes the magician into mystical realms and into
communication with the Higher Self. This Department covers all forms of rites and rituals,
for all purposes.
15. Department of Lore (Grey)
Lore means “teachings,” and Lore Mastery is all about knowing arcane (hidden) secrets and
esoteric mysteries known to very few others. It is said that “knowledge is power,” and much
of a Wizard’s true power comes from his vast knowledge. Lore particularly concerns myths
and legends; a Lore-Master is also a storyteller, who can always come up with a tale to
make any point.
16. Department of Dark Arts (Black)
The simplest form of Low Magick is sorcery, in which a physical act is performed to achieve a
result. Sorcery forms the bulk of folk magick, and is often referred to as “Black Magick” or “the
Dark Arts.” An important part of this Department is the Class in Defense. Also included here
are “Children of the Night,” such as Demons, Ghosts, Vampires, and Werewolves.
The Colours of Wizardry [4]
13 Colors of Magick
1. Aqua is the color of Metapsychics, representing all “Mind Magicks,” such as meditation and psychic attunement. Associated with Friday and the planet Venus, Aqua is an excellent hue for peacefulness and profound reflection.
2. Blue, representing the Element of Water, is the color of emotional work; love, peace,
healing and protection. Considered the color of wisdom, thoughtfulness, and celestial regions,
blue shares Friday and the planet Venus with green (as in aqua, or blue-green). Blue is
identified with the signs of Virgo and Capricorn, the 5th (Throat) Chakra and the natural
sciences. A feeling of youthfulness fills this color. Blue is an excellent hue for peacefulness
and profound reflection. Use it for healing, harmony, creativity, communication and resonance.
3. Green, representing the Element of Earth, is the color of vegetation, as in gardening and Herbalism (Wortcunning). Fertility, prosperity, hope, joy, delight, growth and change are all
aspects of green. Forest green is connected with fertility, the body, courage and classical music
or wilderness sounds. Ivy green represents the emotional aspects, coping with grief, cliffside ponderings, and hushed music or silence. Pale green, as in the color of new grass, aids the
healing process.
4. Yellow, which represents the Element of Air, is the color of Divination. Yellow is associated
with mental work; meditation, will, intellect, divination and communication. Another version of
gold, yellow is the color of friendship, goodness and faith. Yellow (or sometimes a very light yellow-green) is associated with Wednesday, the planet Mercury, the sign of Taurus and the
3rd (Solar Plexus) Chakra. Golden yellow is the color of charm, trust, Summer, bright sounds
such as children’s laughter, and upbeat music. Pastel yellow tends more towards Spring,
psychic endeavors and creativity. Yellow is a terrific color to improve balance, self-esteem, charisma, divination and creativity. Use it also for strength of will, vitality, purpose and
effectiveness.
5. Orange is the color associated with the performance arts and conjury (stage magics).
Orange represents pride and courage; heroism and attraction; kinship and prosperity (as
in a good harvest). Orange is attuned to warmth, friendship, abundance, spirit, will,
principles, theory and alertness.
6. Red, representing the Element of Fire, is the color of Alchemy, and the magickal arts and sciences of transformation. Red is associated with Physical work, as in healing of people and animals. Also physical passion. Red is the power color. It is associated with command, the
planet Mars, Tuesday, the astrological sign of Gemini and the 1st (Root) Chakra. Red is the
color of inspiration, vitality, pride, anger, bravery, strong emotions, purification, arid places, aggressive music (especially drumming like a heartbeat), and lightning storms. Red is the best
color to ward off danger. Use it for stability, grounding, prosperity and physical health.
7. Pink is the color for all our relationships with other people—and especially those involving
family, love, intimacy, and romance. Like copper, pink is also a color of Venus. Copper is
related to the agrarian aspects of Venus—plants, fertility and growth are the common
associations. Pink is more related to the emotional and spiritual aspects of Venus; specifically
the emotional love of one’s self and others.
8. Brown is the color of Beast Mastery, the most common color of fur and feathers, and
represents all things soft and fuzzy. Brown Wizards often work in pet stores, animal hospitals, shelters or zoos; or become park rangers or wildlife rescuers. And always they are
surroundedby critters—whether pets, farm animals, wild creatures or other “animal
companions.”
9. Violet is the color of Spirit, etheric realms, higher esoteric learning, ancient wisdom
and the deeper Mysteries of the Cosmos. Violet is associated with power, wealth, and good
fortune. Considered the color of royalty, violet (purple) represents judgment, industry, and
religious thought, the planet Jupiter, Thursday, the 7th (Crown) Chakra and old age. It is also associated with several astrological signs: Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces. Use
violet as your focus specifically for spiritual centering and meditation, as well as expanded consciousness and cosmic awareness.
10. Clear is the color of numbers and mathemagicks, reflecting the transparency with which
all creation is suffused with magickal formulae—underlying everything, but invisible to all but
the imagination.
11. White is the color of Ceremonial Magick, as it is used for all types of ceremonies and
rituals. The color of purity, white represents friendship, the Moon, Monday, infancy and the
sign of Aries. Crystal white is the color of sincerity, divinity, transformation and singular
focused sounds such as a gong or bell. White is also the color of The Goddess, and so used
in all forms of blessings.
12. Grey is the color of knowledge, lore and wisdom. Like Indigo, Grey is particularly
associated with Wizardry, as it is neither black nor white, and indeed encompasses all
colors while being none of them.
13. Black is the color of Sorcery and the “Dark Arts,” relating to constricting, binding and
Saturnian energies. As the color of night, black represents foreboding, fortitude, and
consistency because of the need to “make it through the darkness.” Black is sometimes used
as a protective color for magickal tools—especially handles and wrappings. It is also used
when trying to banish a bad habit, turn negativity, or make drastic life changes.
