Laneth Sffarlenn is a relatively young (26) aspiring web developer & designer from Melbourne, Australia.
By day, he’s currently a Corporate Secretary, working in Company Compliance for a small firm in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. This is what pays his mortgage.
By night, however, things definitely change…
And when I say, “By night,” I don’t necessarily mean by “Night” as such, but more any time spent outside the office, (which is typically the night time during the week…I’m a slave to the “I spend more time at work than I do at home” syndrome…)
Oh right, Hi everyone! #wave { function: wave.do; }
So, right. Back to the “about” stuff then.
The birth of Sffarlenn.net was in 2007, where it was simply a novelty to have my own domain name. Not a lot happened back then as I was still just getting used to working full time (for the first time) and was too tired outside work hours to really get anything done.
So, stagnant and abandoned, by domain merged with the horde of abandoned websites online and went on a massive rampage of … wait, no it didn’t.
Sorry folks.
Practically it lived untouched for almost the first year of its life, with a free html template serving a very basic “need”, and that being to have my name and contact details online.
Despite several failed attempts at converting the site into a personal blogging site, I hit to ground running in early 2009 when I discovered PSDTuts, and from there NetTuts – both part of the Envato Network.
The tutorials delivered therein convinced me very early on to purchase their 3 Month subscription (at the time I wasn’t sure how much time I’d be able to devote to my renewed web passion each month…) so that I could access some of the more attractive and extensive training articles, or “Tuts”.
It was shortly around the time of my first renewal, and thanks to Jeffrey Way‘s periodic posts about the “SitePoint” books, that I was introduced to a very dangerous* area of the web: SitePoint.com
(Dangerous = Me + Spending Money on books)
SitePoint became such a passion for me that I checked the site, along with the Envato sites, daily. Sometimes hourly. It quickly overtook the form of Passion, and evolved into Obsession by Calvin Klein.
The ebb-and-flow had begun. I would begin every day, and sometimes spend way too many hours throughout said days, reading as many tutorials, articles and reviews as I could get my tired, dry and beady little eyes on.
You wanna guess what happened next?
Well, what actually happened was a period between shortly before my birthday in August and my marriage in November where I worked on designing and coding up my very first non-personal websites.
Two were a great success, and the third was my first failure. However, the failure was a success in its own right due to the fact that the client and I are still great friends and she was able to have her vision realised by another designer, and I had learned several valuable lessons in humility (and when too much is too much!) and my own personal limits on just how much I can do at any given time.
So, once I was wed and returned to the land of the living in December 2009, I had so much to catch up on! The Envato Network had released new sites in their marketplace, SitePoint still delivered such quality content that I spent almost a week reading old articles, and the next biggest thing happened: I got fully involved in Twitter.
Through Twitter, I’ve discovered so many wonderful blogs, and made some truly wonderful friends (whose blogs you can find linked on the top-right of my site under “Must Read Blogs”). I have become an avid sharer of links and interesting “tweets”, which gained me over 100 followers in a little over two months.
From there, I’ve gained an insight into the Social Media arena, and am currently surfing on a wave of around 20-25 different Social Media accounts, all with the same purpose: to save and share awesome blog articles and tutorials from around the web.
